Basic Fatigue Management (BFM) is a unit of competency that involves the skills and knowledge required for Heavy Vehicle drivers (truck & bus) to manage fatigue and to work safely within the transport and logistics industry.

BFM Course

BFM, a unit of competency deigned to help heavy vehicle drivers learn the principles of fatigue management. Principles can then be applied within the workplace while adhering to workplace and Australian safety standards in the transport industry.

  • Course Duration –4 to 6 hours face to face classroom training
  • Training – Classroom face to face theory and practical course

Course Overview

Work is performed under some supervision as a single operator and/or within a team environment. Legislative and regulatory requirements are applicable to this unit. The primary legislative requirement of this unit of competency is the Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL).

Being awarded this unit of competency is a necessary requirement to operate under National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) Fatigue Management Accreditation but is only one of the criteria.

Prospective applicants should check with the NHVR before undertaking training and/or assessment.

Training program provides the skills and knowledge required to apply fatigue management strategies, including identifying and acting upon signs of fatigue and implementing appropriate strategies to minimise fatigue during work activities. The course includes:

  • Applying fatigue risk management strategies
  • Identifying and acting on signs of fatigue
  • Operating within a fatigue risk management system
  • Planning and navigating trips, updating and maintaining records
  • Complying with work and rest limits
  • Implementing appropriate strategies to minimize fatigue during work activities

Pre-requisites & Requirements

  • Current photo ID
  • Appropriate clothing including closed in footwear must be worn
  • Basic competency in English language, literacy and numeracy
  • A current USI number is required
